Five on Friday | Nov. 6

Every Friday, I will post my favorite things that happened during the week, whether it be inspirational quotes, trending topics, a recipe I tried or a book recommendation. Whatever catches my eye from week to week, I’ll post here. Oh, and TGIF everyone!

| What motivated me this week |

This quote helps me take a moment to check in. And by checking in, I mean evaluating my character. Too many times we lose ourselves in the craziness of life. And it’s always good to come back to our roots and remember who we are and how we treat others. Each week, I celebrate my successes, but also note my failures for improvement. I work my hardest, yet take the time to unwind and refresh my body and mind. And kindness—the North star in a dark world.

I’m trying now, more than I ever have, to be kind not just in my words, but also in my actions. It can make a world of difference in someone else’s life. You can be that bright light for someone because everyone is fighting a hard battle some way or another.

Wow, was this an inspirational read! I decided to read “I Am Malala” for Lauren Conrad’s November book club. Even though I ended up purchasing the wrong edition for the book discussion (I know, something I would do), it was still a wonderful read. And as I turned the last page today, it made me reflect on how much we take education for granted in first-world countries. Malala, a Pakistan native, is an ambitious young woman wise beyond her years.

Malala stood up for the one thing she truly believed in: An education for all girls and risked her life for it. She was shot by the Taliban, and as I see it, that shot was heard around the world by everyone. So many women in this world do not have equal rights to read, write and stand up for their beliefs. Before I start on my soap box, buy the book because it’s a MUST-READ. (NOTE: They have two versions: “I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban” and the Young Reader’s edition. I read the first one mentioned.)

Spicy southwestern salad with avocado dressing

I whipped up this salad one day for lunch and it’s divine! It’s bursting with flavor and the roasted sweet potatoes add a nice kick.
