Family recipe: Party cookies with Valentine’s M&Ms

IMG_0518

It’s V-Day weekend and I want to share my all-time favorite cookie recipe that will definitely make your significant other or your gal pals swoon! And what better recipes are there than the ones that just smell like tradition?

No matter how many times I make them, these cookies never fail. The most tried-and-true slice of paradise that has been passed down from generation to generation in my family. My grandmother made them for her three children and during my younger years, my mom brought them to every birthday party, school function, you name it. The cookies were always a hit.

But beware, you can’t just have one of these cookies…they’re like crack. So prepare to be addicted and eat two or…six. The sweet and salty combo is just right…you can’t really put your finger on what’s so amazing. But you can’t help but take another bite. Sweet and savory. Mouthwatering. And just downright scrumptious.

Recipe: Party cookies

Prep & cook time: about 45 minutes

Makes about: 3-4 dozen cookies

Ingredients 2

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • About 1 1/2 cups plain M&Ms (This is what’s fabulous about this recipe; you can change the colors of the M&Ms depending on the occasion! Think: St. Patty’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas)

howtomake

Preheat oven at 375°. Cream sugars, shortening, eggs and vanilla thoroughly with hand mixer or regular mixer.

Add flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Stir in about 1/2 cup M&Ms. Reserve remaining candies for decorating.

Drop about a tablespoon or shape dough into 1 inch balls and place on ungreased baking sheet or sprayed pan.

Decorate tops of cookies with remaining M&Ms as desired.

Bake the first batch for 10 minutes; then for the next two or three batches, bake for 8 minutes. Let cookies cool on wax paper for at least 10 minutes. The most important part of the cooking process is to make sure the cookies don’t overcook. You want them soft and chewy, so make sure to follow the directions exactly!
