My bedroom is my sanctuary. I spend a lot of my downtime there sleeping, reading, writing, watching Netflix and eating late-night snacks (trying to kick this habit.) So it’s only natural that I wanted this space to be comfortable and peaceful.

At first, I didn’t have a ton of extra money laying around to completely redecorate. A lot of the decor and accent pieces in my bedroom are a mix of old and new. I love finding pieces for next to nothing at an antique shop or landing a good deal at TJ Maxx.

My bedroom decor style can be described as chic farmhouse mixed with boho accents and a touch of glam! It’s hard for me to just stick to one style when I love all white elements and reclaimed wood. But I can’t resist feathers (from Etsy) and an India-inspired rug. There is a positive to not having enough money to buy everything at once—I bought decorations over time. And that is what makes a room unique!

From all-white bedding to displaying accessories, here are my five style tips to update your bedroom.

Purchase a hanging shelf.

Nothing screams bedroom chic more than a hanging shelf constructed out of reclaimed wood. It adds a rustic element to the room and is very aesthetically pleasing. I bought this one from Etsy from Makers Eyes. The maker has different sizes and wood shades. It’s a cute way to display favorite books, candles and heirloom treasures. Another idea is to stagger these on the wall and use them as plant hangers.

Get creative with accent pieces.

A few accent pieces can go a long way when updating your sacred space. I envisioned my room to be light and tranquil, but I also wanted to have bursts of color to keep things interesting.

For my dresser, I kept it simple with a gorgeous geometric vase with fresh flowers. The vase was a bit pricey, but it’s statement piece I’ll keep forever. I love fresh flowers and regularly keep them around the apartment. I love this square glass jewelry box to stow away my earrings. A printed chair makes the room pop! I added this floral throw pillow to make things more eclectic. It’s just more playful that way! Display your accessories.

I love showcasing my favorite items in my room, whether it be printed scarves or fancy perfume bottles. Accessories can actually be a stunt double for decor in a bedroom. I’m obsessed with rooms that display clothing on racks and have shoes neatly placed in a row on wood floors.

I hang a lot of scarves on this adorable wooden shelf. It has a few hooks, but I just looped the scarves to create more room. It creates a beautiful backdrop in the room. I also added some books with interesting colors and textures. Items in photo: Wooden shelf – Target

Make a statement with wall art.

I have one painting that I’m truly in love with. It looks like a painter’s palette. Calm hues claim the canvas and it’s just a beautiful piece of art that brings the whole room together. Buying a gorgeous piece of art and hanging it on a vacant wall makes the space cohesive.

This wall was blank for months until I finally decided to move this painting from the living room into my bedroom. It’s rustic yet chic and ties the whole room together with its calm hues. This painting is from World Market. They have an amazing selection of paintings. This one was about $100, but I’ve had it for years and still love it.

Keep bedding simple & add pops of color.

I have always loved the idea of an all white bedroom with accent colors. It transforms a room into a calm, tranquil space. When a bed is graced with white bedding, the room canvas is limitless! Over the past few years, I’ve kept the same bedspread and changed out the throw pillows three or four times. It’s a great way to update a room in a simple way and on a budget.

I hope a mini tour of my bedroom inspires you to make some budget-friendly updates to your space! It doesn’t take a lot of money in the bank to transform a room into a chic space. And if you end up buying things over time, make a list and buy one thing every month. You’ll appreciate those items more than buying them all at once. Happy decorating!
